Introducing Our Staff
The forestry staff of Merrill & Ring, based in
Blenheim, has a wide breadth of experience in most
aspects of plantation forestry in New Zealand.
Murray Turbitt is the Manager of our
New Zealand operations and has been with M&R since 1993.
Before Merrill & Ring he held
positions with the Ministry of Forestry and the New
Zealand Forest Service. His responsibilities include
management of all M&RNZ operations, as well as forest
plantation management, log marketing, economic
analysis, long-term forestry planning, and forestland
development.
Peter Gilbert has been with Merrill
& Ring since 1994. He previously worked as a private consulting
forester and for Timberlands, New Zealand Forest Service, and several
others. His primary duties are all aspects of forestry management;
including field and administration, computer applications, and client
services.
Phillip Woodward has been working on
contract for Merrill & Ring for 10 years and
assists in field forestry activities.

Merrill & Ring Land Ownership in New Zealand.
In conjunction with forestry services offered to forestland
owners, Merrill & Ring has a 2500 hectare tree farm,
located in the Wairau River valley. The property was planted between 1994
and 1999 and is being managed for long-term timber production.
Responsibility of this asset gives our staff a "landowners" perspective
when providing forest management services or advice to clients.

produce, land or forest purchases, forest development/management

New Zealand forestry background information
New Zealand has become a major contributor to the wood
supply of the world.
With 1,822,000 hectares of plantation forest pro-dominantly of
radiata pine. Forest products is the third largest exporter and is an
integral part of the country's economic base. An infrastructure of roads
and railways allow for convenient and economical transport of products
within the country. Excellent ports have been developed for both lumber
and log export. Modern manufacturing facilities have been built in
strategic areas for value-added domestic processing. The forest products
industry enjoys the encouragement of the New Zealand government and the
people.
Decades ago New Zealand made a concentrated effort to develop
their forest industry. As a result of this research Radiata pine was
chosen as the best candidate for establishing forest plantations. Applied
research has continued since inception to improve on this species to the
current progeny that expresses excellent attributes such as improved
surface characteristics, growth, form, and limb size. In addition,
Radiata pine has shown itself to be very adaptable to a variety of
growing conditions. In some areas of New Zealand, Douglas-fir has proven
to be a good alternative choice.
